Named an IIHS "Top Safety Pick" for 2019, the RAM 1500 comes with a variety of traditional, active, and passive features that make it one of the safest vehicles on the road today. Here's a rundown:

Passive Safety Features

Passive safety features are those that remain in the background until called upon. These features activate during an accident to minimize passenger injury and vehicle damage. Seat belts, airbags, and vehicle body construction fall into the passive safety category. Every new RAM 1500, for example, comes with multi-point seat belts for all passengers and six airbags, including advanced multistage front, supplemental front-seat side-mounted, and side curtain placements. Ninety-eight percent of the RAM 1500 is made up of high-strength steel, making it one of the most rugged trucks on the road today, as well.

Active Safety Features

Active safety systems help in preventing accidents. They are always at work when you're driving. Features like traction control, electronic stability control, and automatic braking systems fall into the Active Safety category. Typically, a computer controls most active safety features. Active safety technologies found on the RAM 1500 include Electronic Stability Control with Ready Alert braking, Rain Brake Support, Hill Start Assist, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes with Brake Assist, Traction Control, Electronic Roll Mitigation, and Trailer Sway Control.

Driver Assist Features

With the advancement in computer technology, almost all modern vehicles come with one form or another of what's known as Driver Assist technology. Advanced driver-assist systems employ various sensors that alert drivers to a wide range of unsafe conditions or add assistance in maintaining safety. Features like Automatic High-Beams, Blind-Spot Monitoring, and Lane Departure Warning systems are just a few examples of Driver-Assist features. For 2020, all RAM 1500 models come with standard or available technologies like Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Path and Trailer Detection, Lane Departure Warning-Plus, and Smart Cruising. The RAM's Blind Spot Monitoring system with Trailer Detection scans the blind spot zones along-side and behind the truck.

The system automatically senses the trailer's length and helps with maneuvering. The available LaneSense Lane Departure Warning-Plus system helps prevent unintentional lane drifts. The system provides a visual alert along with gently guiding the RAM 1500 back into the correct lane.

Available Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop and Go detects vehicles ahead. It helps drivers keep a safe distance at high speeds. One of the most notable driver-assist features found on the new RAM 1500 provides active parking assistance. New for 2020, the available Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist automatically controls the truck's steering while the driver handles the gears, the gas, and the brake.
